Free Fall - Dropped Stitch Tank Top Knitting Pattern

This top was originally designed, by me, in 2010. It was my entry in a designer challenge themed One Skein Wonder.

For the smallest size you need 1 skein of Worsted weight cotton yarn. See my recommendations below.

Sizes

S [M, L] to fit bust size: 75-80 [85-90, 95-100] cm or 30/32 [34/36, 38/40] inch.

Yarn

1 [2, 2] skeins of Worsted (9 wpi) weight cotton yarn, 196 m (214 yards) / 100 g.

Needles

4.5 mm (US 7) short circular needle

Long circular needle size 5 mm (US 8) or to obtain gauge.

Gauge

18 sts and 20 rows = 10 cm (4 inch) in stockinette st.

Notions

2 stitch marker

Scrap yarn to mark drop stitches

Scrap yarn to rest stitches on

Notes

Mark all yo increased stitches with scrap yarn. They will be dropped at the end.


Pattern Starts

With the smaller circular needle, CO 60 [64, 68] sts, join to knit in rnd, careful not to twist.

Work [k1, p1] rib for 8 rnds.

Switch to the larger needle.

Front

Worked flat with next 30 [32, 34] sts, leaving the rest of the sts to rest on the needle or on a piece of scrap yarn, they will become the front.

Row 1 (RS): Sl1, k29 [31, 33]

Row 2 (WS): Sl1 pwise, p 29 [31, 33]

Rep these two rows 6 times total.

Sl1, k1 [2, 3], yo, k12, yo, k2, yo, k12, yo, k2 [3, 4]. =34 [36, 38] sts.

Sl1 pwise, p to end.

Row 1 (RS): Sl1, k to end.

Row 2 (WS): Sl1 pwise, p to end.

Rep these two rows 7 times total.

Sl1, k5 [6, 7], yo, k6, yo, k10, yo, k6, yo, k to end. =38 [40, 42] sts.

Sl1 pwise, p to end.

Row 1 (RS): Sl1, k to end.

Row 2 (WS): Sl1 pwise, p to end.

Rep these two rows 5 times total.

 

Sizes M and L only:

at the end of the last WS row, CO 2 [4]. = 42 [46] sts

 

All sizes:

Sl1, k9 [13, 17], yo, k18, yo, k to end. =40 [44, 48] sts.

 

Sizes M and L only:

CO 2 [4]. = 46 [52] sts.

All sizes:

Sl1 pwise, p to end.

Row 1 (RS): Sl1, k to end.

Row 2 (WS): Sl1 pwise, p to end.

Rep these two rows 2 times total.

 

Sizes M and L only:

Row 1 (RS): Sl1, k to end.

Row 2 (WS): Sl1 pwise, p to end.

 

All sizes:

Cut the yarn and leave the sts to rest on the needle or some scrap yarn.

Back

Work flat with the sts left to rest earlier.

Row 1 (RS): Sl1, k29 [31, 33].

Row 2 (WS): Sl1 pwise, p 29 [31, 33].

Sl1, k13 [14, 15], yo, k2, yo, k to end. =32 [34, 36] sts.

Sl1 pwise, p to end.

Row 1 (RS): Sl1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.

Row 2 (WS): Sl1, p to end.

Rep these 2 rows 10 times total. = 12 [14, 16] sts.

Row 1 (RS): Sl1, k to end.

Row 2 (WS): Sl1 pwise, p to end.

Rep these two rows 5 times total.

Size S only:

Sl1, yo, k to last st, yo, k1. = 14 sts.

 

Sizes M and L only:

Sl1, k1 [2], yo, k10, yo, k to end. = 16 [18] sts.

 

All sizes:

Sl1 pwise, p to end, CO 2 sts. = 16 [18, 20] sts.

Sl1, k to end, CO 2 sts. = 18 [20, 22] sts.

Sl1 pwise, p to end, CO 3 sts. = 21 [23, 25] sts.

Sl1, k to end, CO 3 sts. = 24 [26, 28] sts.

Sl1 pwise, p to end, CO 4 sts. = 28 [30, 32] sts.

Sl1, k to end, CO 4 sts. = 32 [34, 36] sts.

 

Size S only:

Sl1 pwise, p to end

Yo, k1, [yo, k3] two times, yo, k18, [yo, k3] two times, yo, k1, yo. = 40 sts.

Sl1 pwise, p to end, CO 3, PM, CO 3, turn. = 46 sts.

Sizes M and L:

Sl1 pwise, p to end, CO 2 [4] sts. = 36 [40] sts.

Sl1, k to end, CO 2 [4] sts. = 38 [44] sts.

Sl1 pwise, p to end.

 

Size L only:

Sl1, k to end.

Sl1 pwise, p to end.

 

Size M and L:

Sl1, k2 [5], yo, k1, [yo, k3] two times, yo, k18, [yo, k3] two times, yo, k1, yo, k to end. 46 [52] sts.

Sl1 pwise, p to end, CO 5 [8] PM, CO 5 [8], turn. = 56 [64] sts.

Lower body

Knitted with all sts.

(RS) Sl1, k the sts for the back, CO 3 [5, 8], PM, CO 3 [5, 8], k the sts for the front, 

join to knit in the rnd. = 92 [108, 124] sts

 

Sizes M and L only:

K to 2 [5] sts before M, yo, k to M, SM, k2 [5], yo, rep from beg once, k to end.

 = 112 [128] sts.

 

All sizes:

K30 [32, 34] rnds.

K to 5 [3, 6] sts before M, let next st drop off the needle, k to M, SM, k5 [2, 5], 

let next st drop off the needle, rep from beg once, k to end. = 88 [108, 124]

K15 [17, 19] rnds.

K to 4 [4, 3] sts before M, yo, k to M, SM, k4 [4, 3], yo, rep from beg once, k to end. 

= 92 [104, 120]

K18 [20, 22] rnds or to the desired length.

Drop stitch round:

K next rnd. Let all the marked sts drop. CO 2 new sts in the place of the dropped sts. 

= 118 [130, 146] sts.

BO pwise.

Finishing

Weave in loose ends. Make sure that all the dropped stitches have ripped all the way.
